1. Basic Definition
A Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) is an automatic temperature control device fitted to the inlet pipe of a central heating radiator. It self-regulates hot water flow into the radiator to keep a room at your chosen temperature, without manually turning the heating boiler on/off.
2. Core Structure
It has two main parts:
Valve body: Installed on the radiator pipe, controls water passage.
Thermostatic head (the twistable cap on top): Contains a temperature-sensitive sensor (wax capsule or liquid gas).
When the room warms up, the wax/gas expands, pushing a pin inside to narrow the valve and reduce hot water flow.
When the room cools, the medium contracts, opening the valve wider to let more hot water through.
3. How to Use It
The head is marked with numbered temperature settings (usually 1–5 or 0–6), each matching an approximate room temperature:
0 = Fully closed (radiator off)
1 ≈ 12°C (low, rarely used)
2 ≈ 16°C (hallways, storage rooms)
3 ≈ 20°C (bedrooms, standard living space)
4 ≈ 24°C (bathrooms, cold rooms)
5 = Maximum open (no temperature limit)

Energy saving & lower heating bills: You only heat each room to the temperature you need. Unused rooms can be turned down, avoiding wasted heat.

5. Important Limitation
TRVs cannot shut down your main boiler. If all TRVs are turned to 0 (closed), the boiler may still keep running, risking overpressure. Most heating systems require at least one radiator (e.g., bathroom) without a TRV as a bypass.
